For more than sixty years there was only one bridge that crossed the swift Tacoma Narrows. This one replaced the famed Galloping Gertie ten years after it was blown to bits. Now there are two suspension bridges standing side by side. In 1991, about 15 years before a second bridge was built I photographed this elegant beauty from the bluff on the west side of the Narrows.

When working with the Daily Mail as an intern, I went on assignment to photograph the new named ambassador from Malawi.  He emerged in a flowered hat and epaulets and stepped up into an open carriage for the ride to the palace.  Before all that when I waited with the rest of the press, I turned around to see this.

It seems we all loved I Love Lucy, and this extended to our young family as well. We had a small black and white set in the kitchen and my wife tuned it to the Lucy reruns to provide what she called “white noise” to get through the inevitable chaos of the dinner hour with four small children. This is my daughter Therese at 10 years old mugging with the TV. She and her sisters named the puppy after Ethel and Fred Mertz.

Tacoma is a world-class container port, but in the early days it shipped lumber to San Francisco on schooners built along the shores of Commencement Bay. My grandfather and his sons operated two shipyards beginning in 1914. The first, called Western Boat Building, could build vessels up to 90 feet overall. The second, Petrich Shipbuilding, could build vessels more than 150 feet in length. It was innovative as an assembly line factory of ships. Both yards burned in huge fires and we are out of the shipbuilding business altogether.

Tacoma is the port of export for wheat and other grains grown on the east side of the Cascade mountains. The grains are brought by train to an enormous elevator on the shores of Commencement Bay.  Huge bulk freighters sail to Tacoma to load the grain from the elevator, and often these ships have to wait for a berth to receive cargo. Most of the grain is destined for Asia. The silos in the photograph are much smaller than the grain elevator on the bay. These in the picture contain feed grains for livestock near the Xcel feed lot on South Washington Street.

The Big Badlands Last Year

August in the badlands is hot. The dead prairie grasses are yellow, but where there is water, green trees. The land is old, and it is barren. It is so dry that the mineral colors of the eras show clearly. Pinks, browns, yellows, and blue gray stripe the distant eroded buttes and canyons. Any organic material, any loam for example has long ago dried to dust.

The scene is millennia before our very eyes because this was the bed of a vast inland sea and we see the layers of earth in cross section there. The layers accumulated over hundreds of millions of years, an incessant rain of dust and death descending to the sea bottom for all that time.

Now the sea lies bone-dry under empty skies in summer and winter.

Missouri Photo Workshop Submission 2018

The workshop has conducted yearly sessions all over Missouri for seventy years with the best up-and-coming photographers in the business. I've sent some of my work, old and new, with the hope that I can add this to my lifelong learning about photography.

"When the late Clifton C. Edom of the Missouri School of Journalism founded the Missouri Photo Workshop in 1949, he too, looked to the past to map the path for photojournalism's future. Inspired by the gritty, content-rich photographs of the documentary photo unit of the pre-WWII Farm Security Administration, Edom promoted research, observation, and timing as the methods to make strong story-telling photographs. FSA director Roy Stryker and photographer Russell Lee worked closely with Edom in the creation of the workshop and served as faculty members during its early years."

This boy coasted up and down the sidewalk on skates behind his sleek young dog, his hand tight on the dog's leash. And when the boy stopped he seemed to puzzle over the right way to tie the dog to a pole. But the dog stood still without the leash, tethered by his gaze on the distracted master.
