The New Tacoma Narrows Bridge was added just to the south of the existing bridge, which was itself built to replace the famous "Galloping Gertie" that was blown to oblivion in 1940. The wreckage of that old bridge resting on the bottom of the strait now for nearly 80 years is home to the enormous Giant Pacific Octopus. The New Tacoma Narrows Bridge opened in 2007.
