I’m working on a series I made in 1977 of Ella Carter, an ancient soul who had just turned 100. Doug McDonald, an author and historian of Tacoma asked me to come to her house with my equipment to make her portrait.

Most of the details of the visit are gone, saving the fact that she lived in the old Hawthorne district just north of the bluff overlooking the tide-flats and the railroad yards near downtown. It was a small neighborhood of houses built for railroad workers in the late 19th century

The Hawthorne district was in the way of a covered arena planned by the city. Shortly after I made these pictures, the neighborhood was demolished for what became the Tacoma Dome and it’s parking lots.

I have no idea what became of Ella or her neighbors after that.

What you see is a scan of the actual print that is for sale. Please note that vintage prints will show regular wear and tear.
