Leroy Ostransky was born to Russian immigrants and grew up on the lower east side of New York. He made his name as an American Jazz Composer. He wrote several books, one named Sharkey’s Kid, his autobiography. Sharkey was his father, who ran he ran a saloon during the dry years of the thirties. He was a hard man, and hard on his son.

Ostransky was a family friend and my mother persuaded him to play a few pieces in the public library downtown. Mom asked me to make pictures of his performance. My cousin tells me Leroy would come to his home, play jazz and drink cocktails with his parents in the fifties. In 1975, Ostransky was named one of the twelve greatest teachers in America by People magazine. He died in 1993.

This performance occurred on May 8, 1980.

This is a vintage print. I made the photograph and printed the negative (camera original) within a few weeks of one another.

What you see is a scan of the actual print that is for sale. Please note that vintage prints will show regular wear and tear.
